Headaches of Hurricane Season
It’s that time of year again. Everyone holds their breaths and hopes for an inactive hurricane season. It’s important to be prepared for a storm that may come through. This includes long term planning – such as making sure to have a good insurance policy in place, make sure to have large scale items like a generator; and have an evacuation plan in place in case there is a need to evacuate.
Have a plan
You also need to have a plan in place for your Estate Plan. If you have to evacuate for a storm, bring all
of your estate planning documents with you – including a health care surrogate and power of attorney.
You do not want these documents getting destroyed in your home. Additionally, if you’re in an accident
and need medical care, you want to make sure you have your paperwork easily available.
If you keep your documents in a safe deposit box, realize that often if a storm is approaching the
branches close down days possibly in advance. Often the banks also require an appointment to access
the safe deposit boxes. If a storm is looming out there with Florida anywhere in its cone, you may want
to consider at least dusting off your estate planning documents and have them ready if needed.
